Wimberley Texans roll on, advance to Semifinals

VON ORMY — In the Class 4A Division II High School football playoffs, Wimberley claimed the Region IV Title last Friday night at Southwest Legacy Stadium with a 38-13 win over the Sinton Pirates.

Wimberley quarterback Cody Stoever was the catalyst, scoring three rushing touchdowns on runs of 4 yards, 31 yards and 19 yards and passed for two touchdowns. The quarterback had 22 carries for 234 yards and completed 13 of 20 passes for 240 yards. The Texans totaled 560 yards of offense.

The Texans took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter with a 22-yard pass to Nolan Waida and Stoever’s 4-yard run. Sinton cut the lead in half in the second quarter with an 18-yard pass, but the Texans scored on a 34-yard field goal by Dail Hernandez and a 60-yard pass to Noah Birdsong, before Sinton’s final score in the game on a 1-yard run with a failed PAT, making it 24-13 at halftime.

In the second half, Stoever scored on a 31-yard run in the third quarter and a 19- yard run in the final quarter for the 38-13 win.

Chase Carson had one reception for 28 yards and eight carries for 76 yards. Parker Doss had one reception for 11 yards and Kyler Lai had one reception for 9 yards. Waida had two receptions for 43 yards. Owen O’Neal had five carries for 17 yards. Defensively, Beckett Bruner intercepted a Sinton pass and the Texans were credited with four quarterback sacks by Lai, Reid Leinneweber, Landon Johnson, Troy Heugly, Payton Peacock and Silas Sames. Hernandez kicked the 34-yard field goal and was five for five on PATs.

Stoever has passed for a total of 2,717 yards with 41 touchdowns and has 1,382 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns. In five playoff games, the Texans have outscored opponents 218-34.

Wimberley advances in the playoffs, where only four teams remain in 4A D2, and will face Bellville High School in the Semifinals. These two undefeated teams (14-0) will play at the Pfield, in Plfugerville, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 8.
