The Wimberley High School Texans (9-0) went to Austin to take on the Austin Achieve Polar Bears (2-7) Friday night. With a perfect regular season on the line The Texans didn’t play around for a second going up 42-0 at the end of the first quarter and taking the game 70-6 at the final horn finishing the season 10-0.
“I was pleased with how we played,” Head Football Coach Doug Warren said. “We wanted to close out the district championship with an outright win and finish the regular season 10-0 with these kids and we came over here and took care of business.”
This milestone just adds to already some other impressive moments in the season seeing Wimberley Head Coach Doug Warren achieving his 100th win earlier in the season.
The offense was firing on all cylinders Friday night as there was only one incomplete pass thrown all game with three different Wimberley quarterbacks seeing the field and making an impact.
“We got it put away pretty early,” Warren said. “Then (we) got a lot of kids that got to play a bunch that typically don’t get to and that was fun to watch them play.”
Leading the way was quarterback Cody Stoever as he threw for 213 yards and five touchdowns on 13 attempts completing 12 of them. Adding on to that was quarterbacks Caleb McCreless and Kyan Mcatee who both threw and completed two passes with McCreless adding a touchdown.
The first quarter was all Wimebrley as they put the Polar Bears out of reach early as they threw for five passing touchdowns and had one rushing touchdown in the first as they went up 42-0 quickly.
After the first quarter The Texans slowed down and used the game to get some situational reps in to better prepare the team for playoffs.
“There are certain things that we will take a look at that we maybe need to get better at or see what it looks like in a game,” Warren said. “So there are situational things that we take a look at and try to get better at.”
After the first quarter saw all of the passing touchdowns, the run game picked up with The Texans adding four rushing touchdowns to the lead with running back Colton Schmidt picked up two of them and rushed for 103 yards on six carries. #10 Caleb Mc-Creless and #7 Owen Oneal also each added one rushing touchdown to the mix.
The defense was also on display the whole game as they forced three turnovers and only let up one touchdown all night. Defensive backs Nolan Waida and Daniel Effiom both recorded interceptions and Troy Heugly picked up a loose ball fumble.
With the final horn sounding off the final score of the game ended 70-6 giving The Texans a perfect season.
“Very confident, we like the direction that they are heading,” Warren said.” They’ve been playing good ball all year long. After this game we guaranteed ourselves one more week and that’s all we got, so we might as well take advantage of that and try to have the best three practices we can have and play the best game we can play to guarantee us another week.”
